No More Toenail
I hadn’t been paying enough attention to my toenails and one of them became badly infected with a fungus. The doctor said it had to go, so he got rid of it for me. It wasn’t that big a deal, but the post-operative pain, as with all operations, is painful.
But instead of taking my pain pills, I decided to make it a part of my meditation practice. My toe is saying “Right now, I am the center of the world. Pay attention to me!” So I am.
The pain is rather interesting actually, when you really pay attention to it. It is always changing and I have no trouble concentrating on it—as opposed to paying attention to my breath, which is not always that interesting.
